I believe in a prevention approach to our wellbeing; why wait until something gets really bad and you land in the ER when you can start fixing it today? It's so much more efficient to prevent problems then to deal with them when they come up.

Reviving Wellness was started as a pandemic project, mostly because I was working it and knew how bad things were before and that COVID was going to make it so much worse. I remember going to the memorial dinner of one of our attendings in the ER who committed suicide. We were devastated. I remember us huddled together, promising each other that “never again will we not know when someone is struggling."

Reviving Wellness is the synthesis of my passion for prevention, mission to serve others, and seeing what patients can't: that their providers and nurses are struggling.

I             believe that we cannot care for our patients well if we show up as a shell of ourselves.

ABOUT REVIVING WELLNESS

I have burned out two times. The first time was when I worked as an ER nurse. I had worked as a CNA, EKG extern, and pharmacy technician before becoming a nurse, so I thought I knew medicine. Boy, was I wrong. I had an intuition that medicine was broken but that was my first real intro into the full extent. My story was, "We don't solve things in the ER. I love prevention work, so I'll go to primary care so I can prevent disease rather than waiting until they got so sick to come to the ER."

I graduated from NP school with my personal trainer cert in hand; I was going to write exercise prescriptions, dontchaknow? And boy, was I met with a cold hard dose of reality. "The tyranny of the urgent" as my preceptor called it really sunk in and my story fell apart. So did I. I felt so lost and adrift. This thing I'd been working toward for so long was so much less than I thought it would be. I burned out again, worse this time.

I knew I needed something to change. I couldn't continue this way. So I started reading and learning, listening to new and different podcasts, and eventually found my way to coaching. It felt like I'd been given the cheat code to the universe; this is what I'd been missing the whole time! Through coaching, I got clarity on what was important to me, how to love my job again, and heal from burnout. I still have hard days like everyone else, but now I can recover better. I LOVE being an NP and working with patients and my coworkers. If you work ER, you know this; teamwork and community are everything. When COVID hit and I saw what was happening to my colleagues across the country, I knew I had to share this with others.

Your struggle is mine, and I'm not perfect, either. I'll never sit here and act like I'm done with this work because that would be lying. Wellness and living a life you love is a practice that is never mastered. It is what guides me every day.

My commitment to you is this: I will always show up for you, I will keep learning about what works and what doesn't, and carry that with me as I keep iterating to make this work for YOU. We cannot do what we do for patients, see what we see at work, and then neglect ourselves.
